How you can help
Financial matters
Although all of our volunteers work freely for Hector’s, without pay, the average greyhound costs us £475 to rescue and rehabilitate because of the costs associated with neutering, vaccinations, worming, dental treatment and other vets bills. Some dogs come to us with racing injuries that require treatment, which can add much more to our costs. Though we ask adopters for a donation, this only covers part of the cost associated with the rescue and rehabilitation of each hound.
Any financial contribution you can make to us will make a difference! To donate to Hector’s Greyhound Rescue, visit our Donation Page. Make a one-off donation with a Debit/Credit card without a PayPal account. Or help out every month with a recurring donation. Recurring donations require a secure PayPal account from where you can pay with a Debit/Credit card and manage your monthly payment.
Alternatively, please contact us if you would like to make a cash or cheque donation to Hector’s Greyhound Rescue.

Volunteering
Never underestimate the importance of offering your services as a volunteer. Without the help of volunteers, Hector’s Greyhound Rescue couldn’t rescue and rehome beautiful greyhounds. What could you do to help?
- Help at street collections collecting much-needed funds
- Help at store collections, once again collecting much-needed funding and also sharing the word about Hector’s Greyhound Rescue and our beautiful hounds that need a forever home
- Transporting greyhounds
- Grooming the hounds at the kennels
- Walking the hounds at the kennels and offering human contact and cuddles
- Home checking
- Helping at the Christmas fair
- Helping at our dog shows
- Offering coffee mornings
- Administrative duties
- Any form of income generation ( Charity events/sponsorships etc. )
Whatever time you can offer to help volunteer will benefit the greyhounds rescued by Hector’s. As a charity, we rely solely upon funds raised and the support of our volunteers.

Fundraising
Could you help by fundraising? Here are some ideas:
- A sponsored run/walk
- Bake sale
- Cycle ride
- Coffee morning
Many people start a Fundraiser for us on Facebook around special times, like their birthdays. Visit our Donation Page for more details on how you can start your own.
Hector’s Greyhound Rescue has even had a volunteer undertake a ‘Wing Walk’ to help raise funds. What a fantastic achievement.
Leaving us a Legacy
Hector’s Greyhound Rescue is a registered charity made up of a dedicated group of volunteers who devote their time to saving and rehoming ex-racing Greyhounds and other sighthounds. We have grown over time and have rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed more than 300 Greyhounds since April 2015, forming a large Sighthound community
We rely on our supporters, donations and legacies, to help cover the costs of caring for, rehabilitating and finding these beautiful hounds their perfect ‘forever home’. Legacy gifts are hugely important to Hector’s and enable us to continue to be there for even more of the dogs waiting for our help.
Dogs coming into Hector’s are being given a second chance and, often for the first time, are shown real care and affection, something so often missing from life on the tracks! All dogs coming to us are assessed, given a warm, comfortable kennel space and are fully health checked before receiving whatever medical care they need. They are also neutered and microchipped before going on to the wonderful life that they deserve.
Remembering Hector’s Greyhound Rescue in your Will means that dogs such as Hero will continue to have the opportunity to live a safe, comfortable, happy life in a loving forever home that they deserve. Other dogs may, for many reasons, be unable to be rehomed and so will stay with Hector’s for life, these dogs too will benefit enormously from your legacy. Thankyou!
In Memory Giving
In Memory Giving is the act of paying tribute to someone special by donating to a charity or cause that meant a lot to them during their lifetime, in their memory.
Many people ask that friends and family donate to charity instead of buying flowers when someone passes and your donation can be sent directly to Hector’s Greyhound Rescue by cheque, bank transfer, PayPal or via our website (https://hectorsgreyhoundrescue.org/donate/), or your funeral director can do this for you.
Alternatively, you may find it preferable to place a request for donations in funeral announcements or at the service itself. If this is the case, Hector’s can provide you with individual collection envelopes.
Leaving a Legacy to Hector’s Greyhound Rescue
You may consider including a legacy donation or gift for Hector’s Greyhound Rescue in your Will. The gift can take whatever shape you choose and there are different ways of doing it. You could leave a fixed amount (i.e. where you choose the figure) or you could leave a percentage or share to us or, if you wish, you could leave us your residual estate (i.e. what is left after everything else has been paid) – that would make a huge positive impact to the Rescue. This would make a huge difference to us and would enable us to keep rescuing these beautiful hounds who need our help so much.
A gift in your Will can go a long way and enable us to continue the care we provide for our dogs. Making a gift in a Will to us will help to secure the future and sustainability of Hector’s Greyhound Rescue.
How would a gift in your Will help you?
· Feel good factor – if you have been good enough to help us so far, your help will be lasting beyond your lifetime. We hope that you will enjoy knowing that you are continuing to contribute to the future of our dogs and how much of a difference you really do make.
· No immediate family – it can be difficult to know how to leave your hard-earned wealth if you don’t have immediate family. Leaving it to charity can help make this decision easier and our greyhounds would be incredibly grateful!
· Inheritance tax planning * – Inheritance tax is a voluntary tax. Leaving gifts to charity in a Will can help reduce how much tax your loved ones may need to pay ultimately when you pass away.
· Gifts to charity are tax free * – depending on how much you leave. If you leave over 10% of your net estate to a charity, then your inheritance tax rate will be reduced from 40% to 36% (rates current as at 2022).
· Lifetime gifting * – you can make lifetime gifts to a charity, to reduce the value of your estate for inheritance tax purposes. Whilst this would be great for us, we ask you to ensure you take financial and legal advice to make sure you reap the benefits of your gifting.
* Please speak to a solicitor about making a Will to make sure you are properly advised and it is drawn up correctly. Always discuss your wishes with family members too to make them aware of your intentions. Where any inheritance tax planning is concerned, it is important that you seek specialist advice from a solicitor or financial adviser (we can’t help you with that bit!). They will be able to tell you about your nil rate bands and if there are any reliefs for you
If you would like to discuss anything relating to Legacy or In Memory Giving, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
On behalf of all of the volunteers and hounds at Hector’s Greyhound Rescue, thank you for thinking of us and for your support at such a sad time.
